12pm Lunchtime Discussion: Cycling Author Chris Register and Ernie Broadnax

June 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Concerned about the increasing sense of division in America, Chris Register ditched a career in law and set forth on a pedal-powered odyssey across the United States, seeking to rediscover the shared values and experiences that make us a nation. Conducting one interview per day over a cumulative year, he heard from ranchers, bankers, drug addicts, musicians, autoworkers, and other everyday Americans who could spare a few minutes for a chat. His hundreds of conversations and 16,000 miles of solo cross-country #cycling are being compiled into the Conversations With US book series, the first of which was recently published by Spoke & Word Books.

In #Elgin, Chris interviewed local history expert Ernie Broadnax at the Elgin History Museum while on tour. Now they’re back to read through that interview, together, followed by lots of Q&A! Chris will also be on hand to discuss everything from the technical aspects of a long-distance #bike tour to the lessons he learned and ways his perspectives changed while exploring this vast, diverse country. Stop by to meet Ernie, Chris and his trusty touring bike, and to pick up a signed copy of Conversations With US – Great Lakes States. Sales proceeds will help benefit the Museum.

This is a brown bag event – don’t forget to bring your lunch!
