The Elgin Historic District by E.C. Alft. is a great resource to use for a self guided walking or bicycle tour of the historic district. The whole tour is about 3 miles in length. It is also a fabulous resource to learn about the great houses and people who lived in the homes if you are unable to visit in person.  A joint publication of the Elgin Area Historical Society and Gifford Park Association. 45 page soft cover book about the Elgin Historic District.
